Andrew Board We’ve had the Rugby World Cup, the Cricket World Cup, the Crusaders and the Blacksticks, but deputy mayor Paul Matheson says a British and Irish Lions game could surpass them all. Nelson City Council has allocated half a million dollars in its long term plan if Nelson can secure a game during the Lions rugby tour to New Zealand in 2017. Paul says the region has proven itself as a place that can host international sporting events. “Running on the success of the Rugby World Cup and Cricket World Cup we’re saying to ourselves ‘we get a good return, so lets have a shot at it’.” The tour is one of the largest sports tours in the world and sees thousands of rugby fans from the UK and Ireland follow the team for more than a month. The Lions only visit New Zealand every 12 years and Nelson has thrown its hat in the ring to host one of the games. “I think the Lions tour will attract more interest because they have that base support that travels the world,” says Paul. “It could be bigger than the rugby or cricket world cups because you’ll see more of them on the ground and they love a hamburger or two.” Nelson Tasman Tourism’s Lynda Keene says if a game was to come to Nelson it would be a huge boost for the industry, with the game likely to be broadcast live to a huge audience in the UK, a traditional tourism market for Nelson. wheelchairs mobility scooters walkers/canes electric bed/hoists lift assist chairs bathroom solutions incontinence products daily living aids/products

‘Biggest Anzac Day ever’ This Saturday’s Anzac Day commemorations will be the biggest ever, says the local RSA president, with between 5000 and 10,000 people expected. This year marks 100 years since the New Zealand and Australian soldiers landed on the beaches at Gallipoli during World War One. To commemorate the day the Nelson RSA, along with Nelson City Council, is hosting its dawn service

andrew@nelsonweekly.co.nz at Trafalgar Park this year. Nelson RSA president Barry Pont says the traditional home of the service, Anzac Gardens, is simply too small to host it this year. “Every year it grows and grows, but this

“Yes, I’ll be going to the one in Nelson.”

“Probably go to the dawn service. I’m English so I’m not involved with family, but I think it’s become New Zealand’s national day.”

“We go to the dawn service, my husband’s father was a war veteran.”

Biggest crowd ever expected for Nelson’s dawn service FROM PAGE 1 RSA’s district president, Derek Nees, says this year’s dawn service will be particularly poignant. “It’s the centennial of an event which marked the beginning of nationhood of both New Zealand and Australia. People will want to come to remember and commemorate those who didn’t return from Gallipoli and other battles of the war.” The service will also include live music by brass and pipe bands, and the unveiling of a field of remembrance - nearly

600 white crosses, each individually named for someone from the Nelson province who died in or as a result of World War I service. The crosses will be laid out on Trafalgar Park behind a temporary cenotaph. In other firsts, plans are underway to fly a Tiger Moth and replica Mustang over Trafalgar Park at the conclusion of the service, after which people are invited to stay on at the park to buy breakfast from food vendors. They will be able to wander through the Field of Remembrance and place their poppies on the cenotaph. Trafalgar Park will open this Saturday

at 5.15am for the service. The dawn parade will march down Trafalgar St from Millers Acre to Trafalgar Park at 5.45am with the dawn service to begin at 6am. The Anzac Day commemorations will follow on from a successful Poppy Day last Friday. Barry Pont says takings from the day were up on last year, although the final figure had yet to be calculated. Barry says the extra attention on Anzac Day has had a positive impact on Poppy Day collections. All money raised from Poppy Day goes to help returned servicemen and women.

Oil companies eye conservation parks Oil and gas exploration companies could be drilling in two conservation parks in the Tasman district, after they were included in the latest tenders for petroleum exploration permits announced by the government. Ninety-one square kilometres of Mount Richmond Forest Park and 417 square kilometres of Victoria Forest Park are included in the 2007 square kilometre West Coast Basin block titled 15WEC-R1. The block extends from Murchison north to Mt Richmond and is one of seven included in the tender which was announced by the Minister of Energy and Resources, Simon Bridges, on March 30.

Simon Bloomberg Reporter

Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne says if any oil companies were interested in exploring land in the district he’d be looking at the positives. “It could be a good thing for the region,” he says. “It certainly has possibilities for job creation in the region and my understanding is that if someone did put their hand up there would be a resource consent process before it goes ahead.” He says the consent would look at environmental issues, but if the effects were deemed to be “minor” he would be keen to

see it happen. “If it can be well managed then I’m happy for it to go ahead because it will be good for our economy.” The New Zealand Petroleum and Minerals website states that the West Coast block “is prospective for oil, gas and coal seam gas”, with discoveries dating back to the very early 1900s. An exploration permit gives the permit holder the rights to search for commercially recoverable reserves of oil and gas in a specific area. The activities allowed under this permit include sampling, geological studies, seismic surveys and drilling exploratory wells for oil or gas.

SEXUAL ASSAULT IN NELSON: A woman was allegedly sexually assaulted near the Maitai River Thursday night after socialising at a Bridge St bar. She left the bar with a man she had been socialising with between midnight and 1am walking down Collingwood St and on to Riverside Drive. The man is alleged to have sexually assaulted the woman and then left. Police were alerted shortly after. HOTEL VERANDA DAMAGE: The Wakatu Hotel veranda has been damaged and has the potential to collapse, says Nelson City Council. Council staff are investigating the damage. Coowner of the hotel, Margaret Monopoli, says she believes the damage is due to the old age of the building. She says all the commotion has caused an increase in customer numbers to the bar. KID SNAPPED BEHIND THE WHEEL: A goat has been snapped behind the wheel at a Nelson Supermarket car park. The image surfaced on Facebook and shows Otis the goat and Spot the dog sitting in the front seats of a car outside Fresh Choice in Nelson. Owner of the goat, Miranda Levett, says she often gets people doing a double take when she takes her goat for rides in the car. “He loves car rides, he hangs his head out the window and his big floppy ears flap in the wind.”

WWI fair recreated Locally Owned and Operated

One hundred years on from World War I, Founders Heritage Park is recreating a distinctly Nelson war-time fair. During the First World War, events were held in Nelson to raise funds for wounded soldiers, including street parades down Trafalgar St, signing of the Red Cross flag, Apple Day, and patriotic concerts in the Theatre Royal. One of those events – Apple Day – will come to life again this year with a range of exhibitions and activities, including variety shows of comic sketches and songs of the time, through to a street tea party with games including apple bobbing and hoop ‘n stick. Organiser Maria Anderson says the Apple Day was a uniquely Nelson event. “Apples were a really big thing in Nelson back then. It was all about ‘bring your apples after the harvest and we’ll on-sell them and the profits will go to the families of wounded soldiers’.” She says the plan was to recreate the community spirit of the home front from 100 years ago.

Community bands will be playing on the village green and selected produce will be available from the Farmers Market. Nelson’s local reenactment army group will also be dispatched. Cars and motorbikes from the WWI era will also be there. Members of Nelson’s Vintage Car Club will present cars including a 1912 Rover, a 1915 Ford Model T, a 1918 Buick and a 1911 Mitchell. And four bikes from NZ Classic Motorcycles will also be on display, including a 1918 Excelsior and sidecar, 1914 Royal Ruby, 1911 Royal Enfield, and a 1915 New Hudson. Other partners include the Red Cross, who will be recreating the Red Cross Flag Signing where the public can sign the flag, a replica of the original flag signed in 1915 has been supplied by Nelson Provincial Museum. Local wine group Wakatu Small Sips are also planning an apple juicing demonstration. The fair will be held on Monday, April 27 at Founders Heritage Park, from 10am to 3.30pm. Entrance is $5 per person or $10 for families.

Cameras the latest tool in bid to clean up Victory Andrew Board A year into a campaign to “Keep Victory Safe”, the two women charged with making it happen say positive changes are happening. Their work has led to several initiatives in Victory, the latest being a CCTV camera which was installed last week. The camera was in response to results of a survey which showed that people felt unsafe at Victory Square and wanted it to be cleaned up. Gayle Petch and Marcia Higgs are both on fixed term contracts with the Victory Community Centre. Marcia finishes next month, while Gayle’s contract ends in December. They say their roles were created after the community centre spotted a need. “A year ago there was a lot of intimidating behaviour at the square. People told us they felt unsafe letting their kids use the playground and there were young people here who would approach people asking for cigarettes or money,” says Gayle. The pair also put many of the problems down to the Victory Liquor Centre that is currently closed but has reapplied for its off-licence. Gayle says fighting to keep the store shut is now a

Photo: Andrew Board. focus. “The difference has been huge since the liquor shop closed. There are no broken bottles in the park, there aren’t people sitting here drinking. It’s cleaned up the square a lot,” says Marcia. Kindra Douglas, of the Victory Community Centre, was the person who first identified a need for an initiative to make Victory a safer place. She’s thrilled with the results. “I guess over the past two or three years we’ve noticed a slight increase in what we’d say was unsafe behaviour. There

were a few little fires around the campus, there were burglaries at the schools and then we had the terrible attack at the community gardens,” she says. “I guess that good reputation that we had started to develop was being eroded.” Marica says the project has been a success. “More people are using the park, it’s a nice atmosphere, it’s just so different. You can’t always see the work you’ve done, you can’t always put it in a report or on paper, you just know and it just evolves over time.”

Eion won his first national title last year when he teamed with Storm to win the long-head final in Geraldine. The champion combination showed they hitting good form again as they delivered a near perfect display to win the long-head at the Waimea champs with 96 points. BRASS BAND CONCERT: Nelson City Brass is hosting an Anzac Day variety concert at the Theatre Royal this Saturday. The concert is for people of all ages and will include wartime melodies and traditional sing along tunes such as Pokarekare Ana, several movie themes, a little folk and some recent popular compositions. A special feature of the concert is New Zealand composer Dwayne Bloomfield’s ‘Behold the Narrows from the Hill’ which tells the moving story of the New Zealand Infantry Brigade’s capture of Chanuk Bair on Gallipoli in 1915. The concert starts at 7.30pm on April 25. Tickets for sale at the Theatre Royal. BABY BONANZA: One of Plunket’s biggest fundraisers for the year, the annual Plunket Baby Bonanza is here again, with over 30 stalls featuring children’s clothing, toys and nursery items. The Plunket Baby Bonanza will be held from 9am to 12pm at Hope Hall, Main Rd, Hope, on Saturday, May 2. The cost of entry is $2 per adult, children are free. If you are interested in booking a stall, phone Lisa on 542 4496, large stalls cost $25 and small stalls cost $15.

The whirring of blades, the crushing of metal and the heat of fire, drew crowds to this year’s Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter annual Open Day on Sunday afternoon. The open day is the Helicopter’s major fundraiser for the public and featured a number of rescue demonstrations from the Rescue Helicopter crew, Fire Service, Coastguard, St John and Civil Defence. Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter Trust communications and marketing manager, Paula Muddle, says around 3000 to 4000 people attended the event, raising $12,000 through bucket donations, scenic flights and raffles on the day.

A winch demonstration saw Nelson woman Cindy Day hoisted into the air by the helicopter and swung around, as crowds looked on swept by rotor wash. The helicopter crew also demonstrated how patients are loaded in and out of a helicopter on a stretcher. Chief crewman Paul Bryant says he had a fantastic time demonstrating how the helicopter works and talking with the public. Students have a go at UN diplomacy

BIKER’S BREKKIE: John Westerson, Calvin Muirhead and Steve Holmes at the Bikers Brekkie at 1903 Square in central Nelson last Wednesday. All riders, on motorbikes or mopeds/scooters, were invited to the free breakfast and coffee at 1903 Square, under the Cathedral. The aim of the breakfast was to get riders together in a lowkey relaxed atmosphere and share their stories and advice with fellow riders and, of course, receive a free coffee. Photo: Andrew Board.

Monique Bergman Local students will come together to assume the role of international diplomats and discuss some of the world’s most important international issues this week. UN Youth New Zealand is a youth-for-youth, non-profit, volunteer organisation which aims to educate and inspire young New Zealanders through actions and events. Year 13 Waimea College student Olivia Meikle and year 11 Nayland College student, Andre Castaing are UN Youth High School Ambassadors for the region. They are involved in organising and promoting the annual Model United Nations conference, designed for high school students, which simulates the running of the United Nations. Around 80 students from Nelson, Tasman and Marlborough will attend the event to be held at Nayland College UN Youth ambassadors on Friday. Andre Castaing, left, and Students are Olivia Meikle. Photo: given a country to Monique Bergman. represent before the conference commences and during the course they debate opposing viewpoints and vote on a resolution that would be of benefit to each country. “Being involved in UN Youth provides a high school voice, it also helps develop skills in analyzing issues and public speaking, as well as making you look at issues from other people’s perspective,” says Andre. The event is a chance for youth within the Nelson-Tasman and Marlborough region to learn about diplomacy and global issues, and meet like-minded individuals who want to make a difference in their community. Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne will be opening the event and welcoming the delegates.

Should speed limit on Lower Queen St be lowered? I absolutely agree. Heather Waters. No, it's fine as it is. Amanda Ohlson.

No, just learn to drive. Nathan Wells.

Yes, it should have been done years ago. Brenda Kenny. I'm not sure the traffic going slower will make people actually LOOK properly before coming out of McShane Rd. Dez Tinee.

No! Just teach the BAD Nelson drivers how to drive! Mike Roberts.

No because most people already drive there at 50!! Lower it to 50 and they'll go 30! Philippa Foes-Lamb.

Learn how to drive and pay attention, simple. Del Orpwood-Babbington. Learn to drive, pretty simple...... Nick Naylor.

Are you freakin kidding me? Any slower you may as well be walking. Every time I come to town it astounds me: 1. How slow people drive. 2. How badly they drive and 3. How many cops you have waiting to get their quota! Darryn Galpin. Bikie Brekkie encourages motorcyclists to up-skill. Do they need to? I do encourage riders to up-skill. However, I’ve always thought it is very unfair to include moped statistics with motorcycles statistics as you rarely get a fully licensed or experienced rider using a moped/scooter. I hope ACC didn’t throw in a few off-road statistics also to justify the insane hike in registration costs a while back, as they did with moped statistics. RJ (via nelsonlive.co.nz). I think people driving need to open their friggin' eyes. Keri Williams. Being a learner 'biker', but having been a driver for 33 years, I can't say it is drivers who need to up-skill, they are astoundingly dopey here in Nelson, or just plain thick! Brian Gower. home anyway. Amanda Murphy. I still don't understand why people need to “be informed” of cameras. If they are doing nothing wrong, they would have nothing to be informed about! Cheryl (via nelsonlive.co.nz). Storm water rates: A plan, accepted by many Nelson councillors that the storm water removal charges in your rates will be included in your general rate charges, will affect all owners of a property whether the land value is high. If you happen to be retired and live along the Maitai river, or in any area of Nelson where land value is high, increases of what you used to be paying in total rates will be staggering. On the other hand when you live in an area where land value is low you will see in some cases no increase or very little increase. The reason given by councillors for the increase is the extra costing related to the floods in 2011 and 2013, more money is needed. A fairer system is to get the money from increased general rates and leaving storm water rates equal for all ratepayers. If storm water rates are changed, the same might happen next year with the uniform rates for the removal of waste water. What to do about it before it is too late? Ask the council for a “Nelson City Council Public Consultation form” and make sure it is delivered this month. Addo Mulders Sr.

When the new YZF-R1 motorcycle was unveiled at Filco Farm and Sport in Nelson as part of its global launch last week, two of the people in the showroom had already had a sneak preview of Yamaha’s latest supersport model. Filco’s owner Dave Filer and one of his mechanics, Jeremy Read, were among just a handful of people to see the bike’s engine being developed and tested at Yamaha’s headquarters in Iwata in Japan. Jeremy and Dave had been invited to the factory after Jeremy was one of just 20 Yamaha mechanics selected from 33,000 applicants worldwide to compete in the Yamaha World Technician Grand Prix last October. Although Jeremy enjoyed the twoday competition, which tested a wide range of mechanic’s skills including diagnosing and repairing faults, motorcycle and component assembly and a theory examination, he says the highlight of their trip to Iwata was a visit to Yamaha’s headquarters. “It was absolutely the highlight of the trip, visiting the Yamaha factory. The security was so tight they took all our cellphones and cameras off us so nobody could take any photos and we were all dressed up like surgeons in an operating theatre so we didn’t contaminate anything. “We saw bits and pieces of the R1 engine which was a real privilege

and had a tour of the assembly line. It took 390 staff only 90 minutes to assemble a bike, test it on the dyno and then pack it for freighting - it was incredible.” Jeremy says he also enjoyed experiencing the Japanese culture and, surprisingly for a “meat and potatoes Kiwi bloke”, he also enjoyed the Japanese food. “It was my first trip to Japan and I was amazed by the courtesy and friendliness of all the Japanese people. I was also pleasantly surprised by the food - I made a decision to try everything and really enjoyed it.” Dave says it was a real honour for Filco to have a mechanic in the Yamaha World Technician Grand Prix and he was proud of Jeremy’s top five finish. Jeremy also won the Customer Service section of the competition. “Jeremy worked really hard over the last four years to try and qualify for the competition so it was a real honour for him to qualify. He won the Australasian competition in 2013 to get there and he was the only mechanic from the Southern Hemisphere at Iwata.” Jeremy has worked at Filco for nine years, after leaving Nayland College and initially training as an engineer and then car mechanic. However, he has always been a motorcycle enthusiast, buying his first motorcycle off Dave 25 years ago. “It was a DT175cc. I used it to ride to school at Nayland.”

Texture exhibition gives tattooist a new ‘canvas’ Stoke artist Cate Murphy spends most of her day working on live canvases, so she always enjoys the opportunity to paint on inanimate objects. Cate was one of nine artists from around the Nelson region who had their works on display at Sunday’s opening of their Texture Exhibition, at The Old Post Office in Upper Moutere. One of Cate’s pieces was an old handsaw which she had painted and she says it makes a change from her usual medium. “I’m a professional tattooist, so it’s nice being able to do what I like when I paint these objects,” Cate says. “Everything is a canvas so I just find objects, like this saw and old mahogany and cane trays, and paint them - it’s kind of folk or recycled art.” Another Stoke artist, Rachael Brown, was exhibiting photographs of dahlia’s on a textured cotton canvas. She was inspired to photograph the flowers after spending

Family of war heroes ready for Anzac Day

A Nelson mother has given her daughter a special Anzac legacy to be handed down to future generations. Aubrey Lumsden, who turns 93 years-old next month, has been attending Anzac Day services since the end of World War II. Her daughter, Jan Phipps, joins her each year to remember her grandfather and father who served in the First and Second World Wars. To mark the Anzac First World War Centenary, Jan asked her mother, who is an avid knitter, if she would make her a shawl out of knitted poppies to wear at the commemorations. “I’ve knitted around 100 poppies this year, so I thought why not sew some of them together and make a shawl for Jan to wear in the parade,” says Aubrey. Their family has a long history with the military, which starts with Aubrey’s father, Edward John Pahl, serving at Gallipoli during World War I. “He came back from Gallipoli sick and wounded, he was a signaller and he slept in a bivouac on the cliff at Gallipoli and would have to run around the trenches, I remember him saying the scenes were terrible. When the war finished, he would attend the Anzac Day services then come

home and sit and listen to the radio and tears would stream down his face,” says Aubrey. When war broke out in 1940, Aubrey was employed in the Nelson Women’s Auxiliary Army Corps as a shorthand typist and received medals for her service. “We were busy with all things pertaining to war. I was promoted to a Lance Corporal and got an extra sixpence a week which I was happy about,” says Aubrey. Aubrey met her husband, Ken Lumsden, who was a trainee pilot in the Royal New Zealand Airforce, during her college days in Nelson. She married him during the Second World War, in 1943, just after he had completed his airforce training. “We married during his final leave because soon after his training was finished he got posted, it was a Friday night and we rushed into Nelson to find a wedding ring. Ken went overseas straight away after we married and I spent my honeymoon in Auckland by myself,” says Aubrey. He served as a fighter pilot during the war, flying Dakotas and Kittyhawks in the Guadalcanal cam-

While on a mission, Ken was shot down by the Japanese, but managed to land on a submerged coral reef. With only the tail of his aircraft sticking out, he was able to get to his life raft and tie it to the tail and waited in the

hot sun to be rescued. Eventually, he saw a US Naval ship in the distance and started waving his distress flag. Unfortunately, the flag was red with a white circle in the middle, similar to a Japanese flag and the Americans mistook him

for the enemy and started shooting. He quickly realised what was happening and took off his flying cap to show them his fair hair. He was taken to their US base and was reported missing by his squadron for 11 days. “His squadron thought he had been shot and killed, and they had written a letter addressed to me saying that he had fallen behind formation and encountered the enemy alone and that he was missing, presumed dead, and they were searching for him,” says Aubrey. Her husband was found before the letter was posted and it was given to him as a memento. After the surrender of Japan, he served at Hiroshima and Nagasaki, bringing the J-Force soldiers back home. When he returned, he worked as an Airforce Relations Officer in Nelson and was involved in recruitment. Aubrey’s son, Paul Lumsden, also served in the army for 29 years and retired as a Captain, having toured East Timor, Sinai and Egypt. Jan remembers her father, Ken, as a loving and gentle man. “Dad never talked to us about the war until he got sick and was having terrible nightmares about it,” says Jan.

Scholarship winner ready to get her dream Andrew Board

As a young mother, Raylene Stringer had to ditch her dream to become a nurse, but ten years on she’s ready for another crack at it. Raylene decided that studying to be a nurse while raising a young child and paying the bills was too much to handle, so she instead turned to a career as a vet nurse. But with her son now grown up, Raylene has cut all luxuries from her life to head back to study full time and live her dream. “It’s hard, but I love it. I’ve given up a lot, the sacrifice is huge, but I’m not scared of a challenge.” The full time course at NMIT takes three years to complete, but it’s not just the studies that

are hard work, juggling finances at home is just as tough. “I’ve had to tighten my belt on everything, the only thing I’ve allowed myself to keep is my gym membership. Everything else has gone. I gave up coffee, although there is still instant sometimes.” Due to her tight budget, Raylene says she looked around for what scholarships she was eligible to apply for. She came across the Soroptomist International of Waimea Scholarship Grant and, after a gruelling selection process, was picked to receive $2500 from the group. Member Helen Bywater says there were 24 applicants this year and it was the toughest decision yet. “It was difficult this year. Very, very difficult. The thing that struck us about Raylene is

that she knows where she’s going. She’s being very brave going back to full time study and she had a clear vision about where she was heading.” The money can be used for anything that will help with her studies, says Helen, from paying power bills to study costs or even a dentist’s bill. “They’re all mature women and we trust them to use it however it will enhance their study.” Raylene says, when she found out that she’d won the scholarship she was delighted. “I was so excited. I laughed, I cried, all those emotions. It was amazing.” As part of the deal, Raylene must pay a couple of visits to the soroptomists throughout the year and let them know how she’s going with her study.

A glorious day awaited shooters to come and test their skills at the 2015 Nelson Waimea Gun Club 80 target Duck Shoot last weekend. Word must have got around town because 105 shooters turned up. It was a fantastic sight at the Gun Club, the grounds looking immaculate and the car park full. Both local gun shops, The Gun Shop Motueka and Richmond Hunting & Fishing had display stands attracting much interest. Cheers Nelson certainly wasn’t short of drinking houses in its early years. By April 1843, only a year after settlement and with only two to three thousand settlers, the town already had 13 hotels and taverns.

These human watering holes were considered to fulfil a social need where working men could gather in warmth and comfort to forget the primitive conditions under which so many of them lived and worked.

Generations of Nelson presents Snippets of History Volumes 1–3, $15 per book or the full set for just $40. Purchase from Marsden House or NZME.Nelson 41 Selwyn Place, Nelson.

Peace of mind for vehicle owners is what drives the team at Tyres & More. Their quality service is backed up by the best warranties in the business for both batteries and tyres. When you purchase a premium passenger car battery, the supplier has already ensured you’re getting the longest warranty in New Zealand, but owner Adrian Curtis and the team at Tyres & More have extended this even further to four years because they believe so much Adrian Curtis in the products they stock. With a range of new quality tyres, Tyres & More once again offer the best warranty on the market when they immediately include a roadside hazard warranty, at no extra cost, when you purchase a new tyre from any price bracket. That means if you puncture or damage your tyre beyond repair, they’ll replace that tyre for you. Tyres & More also provide full mechanical repairs, so call in and see Adrian and the team when your vehicle needs attention, whether its brakes, WOF repairs, performance upgrades, services or maintenance checks. What are the benefits to selling with Penelope from RE/MAX Elite compared to privately? I am an experienced sales negotiator working on your behalf to get you the best price possible in the shortest time frame. I know what is important to buyers in the first instance, what they want to see, not what you may think is important to them. I also help you to present your property to attract the right buyer. Buyers will come to me and often won't go to private sellers. I can advertise more widely and internationally. I am professional and trained at what I do and excellent at negotiations, plus ensuring the owner is safe legally. Buyers and owners

What does RightWay do differently that can help local Nelson businesses? One of our biggest points of difference is the unique Regional Partner role; my sole focus after I have bought a client on is to look after them. It’s a real serviced approach. My time is not caught up with admin, technical reviews, and management - so there’s more time to help business owners.

trust me as they know I am licenced and have legal obligations to look after both parties. ARE there any hidden costs I need to know about? No hidden costs, everything is above board and disclosed, it has to be legally when you are licenced. Do you assist with the paperwork, offers and all that side of things? Definitely, I take care of all of the paperwork, draw up the offer, negotiate the contract until an agreement is reached, then I liaise with solicitors until the contract becomes unconditional, and you are sold! Ready for your next adventure in life.

Simplicity Funerals

Are the myths regarding using refilled cartridges true? There are some myths surrounding the use of refill printer cartridges. The most common one is that ‘Using Refilled Cartridges Will Void Your Warranty.’ That statement is false - the NZ Commerce Act and the Fair Trading Act states that it is illegal for a manufacturer to require the consumer to use a particular brand of supply. The warranty can only by voided if the cartridge is the PRIMARY cause of the fault. If in the unlikely event that this should happen, CARTRIDGE WORLD’S OWN GUARANTEE covers you. The second myth is that ‘Using Refills Can

What simple words of advice would you give me if I wanted to grow my business? It depends on your definition of what ‘Growth’ means to you, but generally speaking: • Get your business model right. There’s no point trying to grow something that is flawed from the beginning. • Stay on top of your numbers. Especially your cash. Cash is King. • Hire well. A great team can be your biggest asset. It can also be your worst nightmare. • Install good processes and systems right across the business that can be scaled. • Finally, do you have the right mindset? Growth is tough. You have to know that you want it.

Nelson’s Sam McKenzie has beaten Australia’s top ranked swimmers to win gold at the Australian Age Group Championships last week. Over 1700 swimmers from Australia and New Zealand competed at Sydney Olympic Park in the Georgina Hope Foundation Australian Age Group Championships. The meet is considered one of the best age group competition in the world, with Australia being one of the strongest swimming nations. Sam broke the New Zealand age group record in the 100 metre freestyle event. The Tasman Swim Club member swam his fastest time of 52.02 seconds in the preliminary race, breaking the previous New Zealand record of 52.26 seconds held by Joshua Taylor-Martin of Gisborne. He followed that up with 52.06 seconds in the final to take away the prestigious gold medal. He also took home a silver medal in the 15 years 200 metre freestyle final. Showing off his versatility, he also took 14.44 seconds off his personal best time in the 1500 metre freestyle race to finish 7th. “When I broke the New Zealand record in the heats, I was confident going into the final and was ranked number one, I just had to stay strong until the end, as I knew it was going to hurt, I was pretty ecstatic when I looked up and saw that I had won,” says Sam. Also representing New Zealand at the championships were Tasman Swim Club swimmers Caitlin Delaney, who

100 metre breaststroke to make the open final with a time of 1:15.33 and finish 8th. She chopped 0.87 seconds from her time in the 200 metre individual medley to finish 20th. Samantha Trevurza placed 15th in the women’s 50 metre backstroke after earlier finishing 25th in the 100 metre butterfly, and Eddie Neill finished 24th in the 400 metre freestyle event. The age group swimmers are already back in the pool, training hard for the National Age Group Championships in two week's time. “The swimming programme is clearly working, we are one of the hardest working squads in the country and it is starting to pay off,” says Sam.

Tech Clean aims to be the regions foremost property service and cleaning provider. Tech Clean pride themselves on offering a professional, cost effective solution to any maintenance project from general lawn and garden care, to painting, building repairs and cleaning. Their commercial cleaning services are backed up by expert industry knowledge and quality systems, processes and resources, and are put to use on facilities such as offices and schools, pre and post event cleaning, retail stores, end of tenancy cleans, warehouses and industrial premises. Part of these services also includes the professional clean up of trauma scenes, whether in a private home, or the result of an industrial accident. While many people will never encounter a traumatic situation such as suicide, homicide or other serious blood spills, in the unfortunate occurrence of such an event, decontamination and clean up of the area is vital, not only to ease what is an incredibly painful experience, but to eliminate the possibility of blood borne pathogens. Trauma cleaning involves removing or sanitising any object that has come in contact or been contaminated with blood or bodily fluids. When a trauma event has concluded and the lights and sirens of emergency vehicles have faded away, it is the owners of the premises that are faced with the aftermath and that can be pretty overwhelming. Tech Clean don’t just return the site to its original state, they bring discretion and compassion to their customers; genuinely

caring about their customers health and safety, and wellbeing. Tech Clean employs a systematic approach to cleaning that ensures each and every trauma scene is managed to prevent cross contamination or exposure to harmful materials by residents. Their trained service technicians are skilled in removing harmful biological contaminants to prevent the spread of viruses and pathogens such as Hepatitis B and C, MRSA, HIV or E.coli, as well as any lingering odours. As remediation specialists, Tech Clean has one primary goal; to restore their customer’s property and to a safe, and as close to pre event condition as possible. If you are facing any trauma situation, whether it is a suicide, homicide, serious blood spill, industrial accident or unattended death, Tech Clean are only a phone call away to help you get back to normal as quickly as possible and they will take as much time as you need to help you understand the processes, costs and payment options. Tech Clean are also available for many other services; specialising in difficult clean up situations requiring a higher level of technical remediation such as oil spills, chemical removal, dangerous goods recovery and bio-hazards. With tailored solutions for their clients, Tech Clean will ensure you are left with a well maintained, safe and hygienic home or business premise. Whenever you need the services of Tech Clean they are here for you, simply give them a call on 0508 832 425, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Business Update. Adv.

Nelson Netball

There has been plenty of action in Nelson Netball circles and the first goal is yet to be attempted. The Annual General Meeting in February saw the end of Julie McGrath’s rotation on the Nelson Netball Board, while Andy Vincent resigned. Both Julie and Andy have made enormous contributions to Nelson Netball. Under the constitution there were two appointed positions vacant which were filled by Gary Cox and Les Edwards. Both men bring valuable attributes to the 2015 Board. Julie Baxendine was elected as Chairperson as Andy’s replacement. Leanne Cook has been co-opted onto the Board to join sitting members Jane Andrew and Carol Cook.

Dayna Whiting has been appointed as Netball Development Co-ordinator and has hit the ground running as she comes to terms with her new role. One of her first assignments was to organize the recent School Holiday programme. Over 90 Year 5 – 8 players were put through their paces, and by all accounts the programme was resounding success. Nelson Netball’s sub committees have all spent time together to prepare for the coming season. The Competitions Committee have, at this stage, got the most arduous task in organizing the grades, and have opted for eight team grades as opposed to the traditional six team competition. Premier 2 finalists Nelson College for

The Richmond Netball team are pictured celebrating their win in the Premier Grade in 2014 and are all set to take the court again in 2015. Girls A and Stoke Sun City Paint & Panel have taken the two extra spots in Premier 1. While teams each nominated a grade they wished to play in, the Competitions Committee have spent considerable time in arranging a draw for Grading Day on 2 May. Teams will play short-

ened games which will, in some grades, be scrutinized by a panel, and along with the results will determine grades for Round 1. There are 161 teams registered with 33 Senior, 78 Secondary and 50 Intermediate teams, with a significant increase in Secondary grades. Grading Day is

Netball Manager Chelsea Routhan has got her sleeves pulled up and is set for another extremely busy season. 2014 was a successful one, both on and off the court, as Chelsea managed her fiscal role to the highest level to finish the financial year in a sound position. A huge part of expenditure for Nelson Netball is the development of the game and representative expenses. Chelsea is constantly working to form sponsorship partners to assist in this vital area. Russells Curtains & Blinds are major sponsors of the Under 17’s, who have an extensive schedule with tournaments in Wellington and Mt Maunganui. Richmond Mall is the Under 13 sponsors for their campaign. The Games Officials Committee which encompasses Umpires as well as Technical Officials is convened by Deb Vincent. Netball Pavilion. It is an informal session that can not only benefit your umpiring but also your play as rules and interpretation of rules can be clarified. Without a doubt it will be a couple of hours which will be well spent, and the confidence with a whistle will increase. A new initiative is that Senior 3 and lower (Senior, Collegiate and Intermediate) teams will provide an umpire for their own game each week. It is expected that umpires provided by teams will umpire in a professional and impartial manner to provide a good experience for all players on court. If the umpire is a coach of the team, then coaching can only take place at intervals, not while the game is in progress. If a player umpires then that person must umpire the entire game. Marilyn Milne is the Umpire Draw Steward and would welcome anyone willing to take up the whistle and can be contacted on 0275 471 117. The annual Geraldine Hodgson Tournament will be played at Anzac Weekend over Saturday afternoon and Sunday. The tournament will be contested over three grades with the addition of an Intermediate grade as well.

Nelson almost broke its win-less start to 2015 in the most dramatic fashion and against the unbeaten defending champions. Galbraith Group Nelson turned down a penalty shot at goal which would have tied the game with minutes remaining, and instead opted to go for the try and win the game. Despite huge pressure on their line, Star & Garter Waimea Old Boys held firm and collected their fifth win of the year, 28-25. Nelson coach Kade Heke says it was happy with how his players took it to Waimea, but disappointed to still be without a win five games into the club competition. “We needed everyone to put their hand up and I feel like we gave it everything. But we really do need the points now.” He says he was happy with the deci-

If it was a final it would have played out slightly different, but it was a team decision." In other games, Wanderers beat Marist 29-19 at Trafalgar Park and Kahurangi beat Stoke 39-12. Nelson remains rooted at the bottom of the Car Company division one table as the teams head into the Tasman Trophy competition, which includes the club teams from Marlborough. Anzac Day fight for grand daughter of Anzac hero Monique Bergman The Anzac fighting spirit will be with one of our region’s up and coming boxers when she steps into the ring for her first amateur bout on Saturday night. Nelson’s Caitlin Fielder has been boxing training for three years and, despite being asked several times to compete as an amateur boxer, the timing wasn’t quite right. “The opportunity to fight has come up a couple of times but I never felt that I could put 100 per cent into training due to other commitments, but this one came up and all things just fell into place,” she says. Caitlin knows only too well about dedication and sacrifice. Her grandfather is WWII veteran, Les Munro, the last surviving pilot of the Dambusters Raid, who presented his war medals and memorabilia to Auckland's Motat museum in a special ceremony last week. “My grandfather is a pretty big inspiration for me. He doesn’t know I am having a fight yet but he does know that I have been boxing training as I used to visit him on my way home from training when I lived up north,” says Caitlin. Caitlin is a member of the Fight Club Fitness Centre in Nelson and has been training with former women’s national boxing champion, Dawn Chalmers, five

She also manages to fit in another two boxing sessions on the weekend. “Dawn is such a motivation and inspiration, it definitely helps having her in my corner, she has a lot of faith in me which helps with my confidence quite a bit,” says Caitlin. The Aquaculture Technician will be fighting in the under 58kgs weight and is both nervous and excited about her first bout, against seasoned fighter, Cushla Mullany from Christchurch. Despite

her opponent already having four fights under her belt, she is confident in her fitness and training and feels that she has nothing to lose. “Caitlin is a hard worker, is dedicated, a good listener, is very motivated and has natural skills. I am confident in her, she has done everything she needs to do to get into the ring,” says boxing trainer Suds. The Night of Wrecking 16, will be held on Saturday, April 25. Doors open at 5.30pm.
